The whole “the brain isn’t fully mature until age 25” bit is actually a fairly impressive bit of psuedoscience for how incredibly stupid the way it misinterprets the data it’s based on is.

Okay, so: there’s a part of the human brain called the “prefrontal cortex” which is, among other things, responsible for executive function and impulse control. Like most parts of the brain, it undergoes active “rewiring” over time (i.e., pruning unused neural connections and establishing new ones), and in the case of the prefrontal cortex in particular, this rewiring sharply accelerates during puberty.

Because the pace of rewiring in the prefrontal cortex is linked to specific developmental milestones, it was hypothesised that it would slow down and eventually stop in adulthood. However, the process can’t directly be observed; the only way to tell how much neural rewiring is taking place in a particular part of the brain is to compare multiple brain scans of the same individual performed over a period of time.

Thus, something called a “longitudinal study” was commissioned: the same individuals would undergo regular brain scans over a period of mayn years, beginning in early childhood, so that their prefrontal development could accurately be tracked.

The longitudinal study was originally planned to follow its subjects up to age 21. However, when the predicted cessation of prefrontal rewiring was not observed by age 21, additional funding was obtained, and the study period was extended to age 25. The predicted cessation of prefrontal development wasn’t observed by age 25, either, at which point the study was terminated.

When the mainstream press got hold of these results, the conclusion that prefrontal rewiring continues at least until age 25 was reported as prefrontal development finishing at age 25. Critically, this is the exact opposite of what the study actually concluded. The study was unable to identify a stopping point for prefrontal development because no such stopping point was observed for any subject during the study period. The only significance of the age 25 is that no subjects were tracked beyond this age because the study ran out of funding!

It gets me when people try to argue against the neuroscience-proves-everybody-under-25-is-a-child talking point by claiming that it’s merely an average, or that prefrontal development doesn’t tell the whole story. Like, no, it’s not an average – it’s just bullshit. There’s no evidence that the cited phenomenon exists at all. If there is an age where prefrontal rewiring levels off and stops (and it’s not clear that there is), we don’t know what age that is; we merely know that it must be older than 25.

The thing about Microsoft shutting down Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin is that it isn’t really a case of finance bros not understanding how game development works. Sure, saying “we need smaller games that will win us awards” while shuttering studios which have a record of producing smaller, award-winning games looks dumb on paper, but you need to know how to parse corporate doublespeak.

In brief, they want the prestige of producing smaller, award-winning games, but not the risk. The way you get the former without the latter is by constantly buying up independent studios which already have successful titles in their portfolios, keeping them around long enough to provide post-launch support, crank out paid DLC for their already-proven properties, and finish development of whatever is currently in the pipeline, then dismantle them and shut them down before they get any funny ideas about risking your money on new, unproven projects.

If you’re thinking “hey, that sounds a lot like a predatory business model”, well, exactly.

Or as a wise sage named Neil Pert wrote:

“If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice!”

Seriously you disagreed with Biden only on 1 issue?? For real?? Are you blind?

This meme is not about me, it is about 1 issue antizionst hard lefters who will rather not vote than pick Biden who they otherwise agree with on most things.

Myself I probably disagree on at least a few things but nothing too important that would cause him to lose my vote.

The thing is, I have nothing against socialism or communism as a political ideology; trust me, I’m as anti-capitalist as they come. The leftism is really not the problem here.

The problem is when in their leftism, people – Americans, really, and western Europeans – use the ussr as this sort of goal, this complete antithesis to the modern capitalist society, this almost-utopian place to live. They use hammer and sickle symbol, the ussr anthem; sometimes, as a joke, sometimes, not so much.

Not only that clearly shows that they know absolutely nothing about the ussr – it’s also spreading russian propaganda, whether it’s on purpose or not, which is especially insidious now, when russia is literally committing a genocide.

The ussr wasn’t a socialist utopia where everyone is equal. It was a totalitarian dictatorship, responsible for colonisation and genocide of multiple people and cultures. Just like the russian Empire before it. Just like modern russia continues to do now.

For many Eastern European and Central Asian people, hammer and sickle is not just a symbol of a political ideology. It’s the symbol, under which people were starved to death, imprisoned or executed for daring to write in their own language; in which cultures were erased, people – forcefully assimilated, stripped of their own national identity.

It’s the propaganda of being “the same people, the same nation” that russians love to use; that westerners love to believe, for the sole reason of the oppressed daring to look similar to the oppressor; for the sole reason of Americans being unable to look past their own history and realize oppression comes in many shapes and forms.

By using the ussr symbols in your political movement, you’re denying the atrocities commited under that symbol and spreading russian propaganda, whether it’s on purpose or not.

It’s not “progressive” to wave around a hate symbol.

Do your research.

Also, Russia doesn’t even pretend to be communist any more. It’s a nation of oligarchs, Mafia, and Christo-fascism.

Leftists defending Russia because they think it’s socialist are the dumbest of dumb fucks. Or actually Kremlin bots/paid trolls.

idk if this is helpful but I'm sending this bc I saw a comment you made about the eurovision result being proof that the antisemitic pro-pal crowd is a loud minority (something to that effect). Obvs I'm speaking anecdotally but I'm in the UK and yeah, that's v much the case I think. like p much everyone I know who cares about the subject, no matter how critical of the military campaign in Gaza they are (to the point of conspiracy), are still sympathetic towards Israelis and Jews. like please don't look at the London protests (London generally has been a cesspit for antisemitism these past few months) and think the worst parts of them are representative of the entire nations feelings, they're really not. most of us are normal about you guys.

(im not talking about broader antisemitism, this is ultimately a Christian country w all that entails, but just in relation to this issue, people are usually normal. is what im saying.)

I think the fact that we gave 12 points to Eden in ev was ultimately a small show of solidarity for the shit she faced and the bigotry that's been on full display recently. most are deeply critical of it. the separation of people and government is the norm. if any of this is any comfort.

anyway, sorry for rambling, hope you're having a nice day 🌞

I’ve seen posts going around claiming that petting animals is basically tricking them into thinking they’re being groomed, and it’s bugging me because, like, there’s no trickery afoot. Petting and scritching are grooming activities. They help to dislodge loose fur and foreign objects and more evenly distribute protective oils, among other things. Primates are social groomers, and the human impulse to scritch is the legacy of our primate ancestors. We see an animal we like, even a dangerous one, and the monkey brain says “groom that thing”.

Sucking a guy’s dick is basically tricking him into thinking he’s having sex

A couple job interview hacks from someone who has to give a job interview every single goddamn day: (disclaimer: this goes for my process and my company’s process, other companies and industries might be different)

1. There are a few things I check and a few questions I ask literally just to figure out if you can play the game and get along with others in a professional setting. Part of the job I interview for is talking to people, and we work in teams. So if you can’t “play the game” a tiny bit, it’s not going to work. Playing the game includes:

- Why do you want to work here? (just prove that you googled the company, tell me like 1 thing about us, I just want to know that you did SOME kind of preparation for this interview)

- Are you wearing professional clothing? I don’t need a suit just don’t show up in a ratty t-shirt and sweatpants.

- Are you able to speak respectfully and without dropping f-bombs all the time? Not because I’m offended but because I don’t want to be reported to HR if you wind up on my team.

- Can you follow simple directions in an interview?

2. Stop telling me protected information. I don’t want to know about what drugs or medications you’re on, I don’t want to know about you being sick, I don’t want to know if you’re planning to have children soon, I don’t want to know anything about your personal life other than “can you do the job?”

3. When we ask, “What questions do you have for me?” here are my favorites I’ve heard:
- What does the day-to-day look like for a member of your team?

- If one of your team members was not performing up to his usual standard, what steps would you take to correct that?

- What can I start doing now to accelerate my learning process in this job?

- What are some reservations you have about me as a candidate? (be ready for this emotionally….it will REALLY help you in the future, and I’ve had people save themselves from a No after this, but can be hard to hear)

- In your opinion, what skills and qualities does the ideal candidate for this job possess?

- What advice would you give to a new hire in this position/someone who wanted to break into this industry, as someone who has worked here for a while?

Those are just my tips off-the-cuff. I work in sales in marketing/SAAS, so these can be very different depending on the industry, but I wish the people I interview could read this before they show up.

Yes STOP TELLING PEOPLE PROTECTED INFORMATION IN INTERVIEWS. do not volunteer anything including “I’m currently pregnant.”
